BIOGRAPHY

1957-59 Emigrated to Canada aged 17: worked in a Toronto bank, attended drawing classes at Ontario College of Art; then to Vancouver, working as a docker, warehouseman, gardener, and painter of tourist watercolours of English Bay; represented Canada in 1958 at the 1st North America Skydiving Championships; back home to 2 months round Italy on a scooter studying art and architecture

1959-63 Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, four-year NDD Fine Art, where he was taught by Howard Hodgkin,

Harry Mundy and Gwyther Irwin.  

1961 Travelling scholarship to study etching and engraving under S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17, Paris.

Taught etching for a year at Corsham while a student.   Spent winter and spring vacations studying in Paris, summers painting and drawing in the Ardeche

1963-65 Lived and painted for two years on the Prescelly Hills in Wales

1965-66 Resident Young Artist at Bryanston School, Dorset

1966-68 Travelled throughout the Indian sub-continent and SE Asia, studying religious sites, architecture, art, and local cultures; then lived and painted in Tokyo

1968 Returned to live and paint in London; taught part-time at several art schools

1975 Major 3-man exhibition, City Art Gallery, Leicester

Married and had two children, shared their care so painted part-time for a decade

1990s Worked on TV and radio projects; continued to paint and exhibit

1997-2000 Helped develop and then presented the first three series of BBC Radio 4’s walking programme Ramblings, asking the guests the questions listeners might ask and ‘doing the visuals’

2005 Moved to Devon to restore a small farm with environmentally valuable land.

2010 Moved into new studio in converted farm outbuilding

2011 Began the collage series

2014 Elected a Brother of the Art Workers Guild, London

2015 Elected a Member of Whobidarts, North Devon
